Rain, Big Wins & a New Roller Rink? Here’s What’s Happening in the AV

💌 Hey AV Fam! The rain finally pulled up to the AV like it owns the place, and honestly, we’re not mad at it. The air feels cleaner, the vibes are cozy, and some of us finally have an excuse to pull out that jacket we bought during last year’s storm but never got to wear.

But while the skies are doing their thing, the community is busy this week with big wins, local updates, and tons of events to get into.

Let’s get into it ⤵️

🚧Palmdale Rolls Out A Cleaner, Fresher Street Scene

Palmdale is kicking things up a notch with a new citywide street sweeping plan, and yes, your neighborhood is getting the glow-up too. Think cleaner curb lines, safer streets, and fewer mystery tumbleweeds rolling around after a windy day.

Here’s the scoop. The City wants residents to get familiar with the updated street sweeping rules and the Municipal Code so no one gets hit with a surprise ticket, once enforcement begins. It’s all comes down to knowing when to move your car when the street sweeper is coming down your block.

The schedule is super easy to follow. Street sweeping now runs twice a month and lines up with WM’s trash collection. The sweeper rolls through on the first business day after your regular trash pickup. That means if you know your trash day, you basically know your sweep day too.

There is also a new fee schedule with fines tied to street sweeping enforcement. Nothing wild, but definitely something you want to avoid. The best way to keep your wallet safe is to check the posted signs in your neighborhood. Each street has specific hours for each side, and those signs tell you exactly when to clear the curb.

Once everyone gets into the swing of it, the payoff is huge. Cleaner streets mean nicer neighborhoods, better drainage during storms, and fewer things clogging up the gutters. It’s a small move for residents that makes a big difference citywide. Win-win!

🎓 AV High Schools Hit Major Milestone with Rising Graduation Rates

SOAR High School once again hit a perfect 100% graduation rate, leading the way as the Antelope Valley Union High School District posted one of its strongest years yet, climbing 4.1% to reach an 85.8% overall graduation rate, according to the newly released 2025 California School Dashboard.

But the good news doesn’t stop there. Every single comprehensive high school in the district either held steady or improved, showing real progress across the board:

  • Quartz Hill High: 93.3% (+2.7%)

  • Knight High: 92.1% (maintained)

  • Highland High: 91.8% (maintained)

  • Littlerock High: 86.1% (+9.4%, biggest jump in the district)

  • Antelope Valley High: 84.9% (+2.5%)

  • Eastside High: 89.2% (+2.7%)

  • Lancaster High: 88.5% (+3.4%)

  • Palmdale High: 80.4% (+2.1%)

Over in Palmdale, The Palmdale Aerospace Academy continued its own tradition of excellence with a 98.4% graduation rate.

Statewide, California also reached its highest graduation rate since the Dashboard launched in 2017 — 87.5% — with officials noting that every indicator this year landed in “yellow” or “green,” signaling across-the-board improvement.

A good week for education in the AV.

A New Roller Rink May Be Rolling Into Lancaster

Get your skates ready, Lancaster might be bringing back some classic fun. 🛼✨

This Monday, the Lancaster Planning Commission will review a proposal to turn a former medical building in the Lancaster Marketplace into a brand-new roller rink — a move that could bring a fresh, family-friendly entertainment spot to the community.

The applicant, Duana Garrett, is looking to transform the 11,000 sq. ft. former Antelope Valley Surgical Institute (44810 Valley Central Way, Suite 108) into a full-on roller experience. According to the city’s staff report, the space would include:

  • A full roller rink

  • Snack bar + vending

  • Retail shop for gear and apparel

  • Video-game + attractions zone

  • Party rooms

  • Lockers

  • A DJ booth to keep the vibes going

The rink would operate under a conditional use permit since entertainment facilities fall under special review in the city’s Commercial Planned Development zone.

Proposed hours:

  • Sun–Thurs: 10 a.m. – 8 p.m.

  • Fri–Sat: 9 a.m. – 10 p.m.
With designated sensory-friendly hours for guests with special needs.

If you want to see the discussion or voice support, the Planning Commission meets Monday at 3:30 p.m. at City Hall (44933 Fern Ave.).
