Buzz Alert: West Nile Virus Detected in Palmdale Mosquitoes

Palmdale, the buzz is real! Routine mosquito testing near 13th Street East and Avenue R has detected the first local case of West Nile virus (WNV) this season, reminding us that prevention is a community effort.
This isnโt just a Palmdale concern. Across L.A. County, mosquitoes carrying West Nile have already been found in neighborhoods like Van Nuys, Panorama City, Arleta, and Lake Balboa, showing the virus is active across Southern California.
The Antelope Valley Mosquito & Vector Control District (AVMVCD) emphasizes that mosquito season is far from over, and now is the time for residents to stay vigilant.
West Nile virus has been present in California for over 20 years, but each season officials stress the importance of precautions. Most people bitten by an infected mosquito wonโt get sick, but about 1 in 5 may experience fever, headache, or body aches. A small percentage, especially older adults or those with weakened immune systems, can face serious neurological illness.
The discovery comes during peak mosquito season in the Antelope Valley. Warm temperatures, along with standing water from sprinklers, fountains, and small containers, create perfect breeding grounds. Every household that removes water or uses repellent helps reduce risk across the community.
Palmdaleโs first positive test is a reminder: mosquitoes may be tiny, but their impact can be serious.
What Residents Can Do Right Now
Keeping mosquitoes at bay doesnโt have to be complicated, here are some simple steps we can take at home to make a big difference:
Dump standing water weekly from flowerpots, birdbaths, buckets, and pet bowls.
Check gutters and drains to make sure water isnโt collecting.
Fix screens on doors and windows to keep mosquitoes outside.
Use EPA-registered mosquito repellent and wear light-colored clothing, especially at dawn and dusk.
Report unusual mosquito activity or dead birds to AVMVCD, as these are often early warning signs.
With a little awareness and some simple habits, we can all help keep our community safe, healthy, and mosquito-bite free.

AV Alta FC vs Forward Madison FC: Game Update
AV Alta battled to a high-scoring 3โ3 draw with Forward Madison on Saturday, with standout Eduardo Blancas netting two, including a tense 60-minute penalty. Pajaroโs opener added spark before Madison hit back with goals from Gebhard and a brace by Angking. The result keeps Alta sitting in the playoff hunt, level with Charlotte Independence in the standings. A much-needed point, but still leaves them precariously close to the cutoff. Theyโll need to back this up with a win soon to solidify their playoff berth.
