๐ŸŒ Did You Feel That? Quake Shakes the AV

Credit: VV Daily Press

If your walls rattled a little Sunday morning, you werenโ€™t imagining things. A 3.3 magnitude earthquake hit near Pearblossom on September 8 just before 10 AM, and it gave the whole Antelope Valley a little shake-up. Folks from Lancaster to Palmdale felt itโ€”some got a light nudge, others said it felt like a truck passing by.

Thankfully, there were no reports of damage or injuries, but itโ€™s a good reminder: earthquakes can hit anytime.

Even though this one was small, itโ€™s a friendly reminder that our valley sits in an active seismic zone. Hereโ€™s a few quick tips to stay prepared:

  • Keep an emergency kit stocked with water, snacks, and first-aid supplies

  • Make sure heavy furniture and shelves are secured to walls

  • Have a family safety plan so everyone knows where to meet if the lights go out

Our community always comes together, whether itโ€™s a storm, a heat wave, or any unexpected event. Take a moment to check in with your neighbors, make sure pets and loved ones are safe, and share a smile with those around you.

The good news is Mondayโ€™s shaker was small and caused no damage, but itโ€™s always better to prepare now than to scramble later. The Antelope Valley is resilient, prepared, and full of hometown spirit, nothing can shake that! Stay safe, AV!

๐Ÿ—“๏ธ AV Honors 9/11: Community Comes Together in Remembrance

On Thursday, September 11, 2025, the Antelope Valley gathered to commemorate the 24th anniversary of the September 11 attacks. The remembrance ceremony took place at the Antelope Valley Mall in Palmdale, bringing together residents, first responders, and local officials to honor the lives lost and the heroes who emerged that day.

The ceremony featured a multi-agency Color Guard, vehicle displays, guest speakers, live music, and a moving recognition of fallen heroes. County Supervisor and Board Chair Kathryn Barger, alongside the Antelope Valley 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony Governance Board, co-hosted the event, emphasizing the importance of unity and service in the face of tragedy.

As part of the day's observance, all Los Angeles County departments flew the U.S. and county flags at half-staff to honor the lives lost in the terrorist attacks. Additionally, the County Board of Supervisors unanimously proclaimed September 11, 2025, as "Patriot Day and National Day of Service and Remembrance," encouraging residents to reflect on the lives lost and engage in acts of service that strengthen our communities.

The Antelope Valley's tribute serves as a testament to the resilience and spirit of our community, ensuring that the memory of September 11 continues to inspire acts of kindness and unity.

๐ŸŒน Lancaster Sets New Rules for Roadside Memorials

Credit: Everlasting Memories

The Lancaster City Council has approved a new policy that limits how long memorials for lost loved ones can remain in public spaces. Under the rules, items like crosses, flowers, and photos will be allowed for five days before city staff remove them.

Officials say the change is meant to keep parks and roadways safe and clear, while still allowing families a window to grieve and honor those theyโ€™ve lost. Some community members at the meeting pushed back, saying five days feels too short since funerals often havenโ€™t even taken place within that time. They suggested extending the limit or creating a permit system that would allow families to keep memorials in place longer if they meet safety standards.

City leaders agreed to explore that idea, but for now, the five-day policy stands. Two large memorials at Avenue H and 30th Street Westโ€”where several tragic accidents have happened in recent years, are expected to be affected by the new rules.

This is a deeply personal issue for many in the AV, and the city says it is working to balance compassion with public safety.

๐Ÿ’ County Considers Higher Marriage License Fees

Thinking about tying the knot soon? You might want to keep an eye on LA Countyโ€™s latest proposal. The Board of Supervisors will be voting Tuesday on whether to bump up marriage license and ceremony fees for the first time in over a decade.

Hereโ€™s whatโ€™s on the table:

  • Marriage license: jumping from $91 to $176

  • Confidential marriage license: $85 to $220

  • Marriage ceremony: $35 to $44

  • Witness fee: $20 to $26

County officials say the last big update to these fees was back in 2009, and the current rates just donโ€™t keep up with todayโ€™s costs, especially with higher wages and inflation.

For perspective, most neighboring counties keep their marriage license fees around $100, with the highest at $129 in San Diego. If approved, LA Countyโ€™s new fees would be nearly double the regional average.

So, if youโ€™ve been thinking about making it official, you might want to say โ€œI doโ€ before the prices say โ€œI donโ€™t.โ€

AV Alta Falls Short in Tight Match vs. One Knoxville; Playoff Push Still Alive

AV Alta battled hard under the lights on Friday night but couldnโ€™t hold off a late surge from One Knoxville SC, falling 2โ€“1 in a tough home loss. Javier Mariona got the home crowd buzzing early with a 13th-minute goal, but the lead didnโ€™t last longโ€”One Knoxville answered just three minutes later thanks to Mikkel Gรธling. The game looked headed for a draw until the visitors snuck in a stoppage-time heartbreaker, with Kempes Waldemar Tekiela sealing the win in the 92nd minute.

The loss keeps AV Alta stuck at 31 points and just outside of a playoff spot as the pressure mounts. With only a few matches left, every point is golden. The boys showed plenty of fight, but theyโ€™ll need to lock things down late in games and capitalize on early chances if they want to punch that postseason ticket. The dreamโ€™s still alive but the clock is ticking.
