💍 80 Years Strong: Jerry & Betty Long’s Timeless Love Story

Credit: ABC7
In a world where love often feels fleeting, Jerry (103) and Betty Long (97) stand as a beacon of enduring devotion. The Lancaster couple celebrated a monumental milestone by celebrating their 80 years of marriage.
Their story started in 1944 at a Five and Dime store, where Betty worked. They tied the knot in Salt Lake City just before Jerry was sent off to serve in World War II, beginning a partnership that would span eight incredible decades. Jerry, a brave serviceman, and Betty, a devoted homemaker, returned from the war to build a life filled with love, laughter, and a growing family.
Their love story is a testament to unwavering support and companionship. Betty often says, “Anything I need, he’s always been there for me,” while Jerry’s daily acts of care, pushing Betty in her wheelchair, getting her meals, and accompanying her to bingo, speak volumes about his commitment.
When asked about the secret to their lasting love, Betty and Jerry attribute it to their shared faith. “We’re both Baptist and love the Lord,” Betty said. Their spiritual connection has been a guiding light throughout their journey together.
The Havens assisted living community gathered to cheer on Jerry and Betty, honoring their amazing milestone. The event overflowed with warmth, laughter, and the deep admiration this beloved couple has inspired over the years.
Jerry and Betty Long’s story is a reminder that true love is not just about grand gestures, but about the everyday moments of care, respect, and faith. Their 80-year journey is a shining example of what it means to love and cherish someone through all of life’s seasons.

🏘️ Lancaster Greenlights 228-Unit Affordable Apartment Complex

Credit: City Meeting Recording
Big housing news out of Lancaster. The Planning Commission just gave the green light to Sierra Azul, a 228-unit affordable apartment community planned for 15th Street West and Avenue K-8. The project, led by AMG Associates, will transform 11 acres into a neighborhood of three-story walk-up apartments with plenty of community perks.
All units will be 100% affordable, with income eligibility ranging from 30% to 60% of Los Angeles County’s median income. For a family of four, that means households earning roughly $45,000 to $90,000 a year could qualify. The complex will include a mix of one, two, and three-bedroom homes sized between 572 and 1,048 square feet.
What makes Sierra Azul stand out is its thoughtful design and amenities: a clubhouse, pool, playgrounds, two dog parks, shaded picnic and BBQ areas, tot lots, laundry rooms, and even a basketball half-court. Architecturally, the buildings will feature modern earth tones, textured siding, and rooftop solar panels to keep things sustainable. The freeway-facing side will also use sound-resistant windows to reduce noise.
In short, Lancaster is making a major investment in affordable housing while also keeping an eye on energy efficiency, family-friendly amenities, and neighborhood feel.
